While the rest of New Orleans takes baby steps back to normalcy, the city's Jazz and Heritage Festival appears to be going full steam ahead.
Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and the Dave Matthews Band are among more than 350 acts lined up for the six-day event, which runs April 28-30 and May 5-7 at the New Orleans Fair Grounds.
Jazzfest organizers aren't saying how many advance tickets have been sold, but the lineup is as solid as ever. Etta James, Jimmy Buffett, Elvis Costello, Keith Urban, Herbie Hancock and Ani DiFranco also are performing.
New Orleans legend Fats Domino – initially reported to be dead in the post-Katrina floods – closes the festival May 7. Hundreds of other Louisiana artists also are on the bill, including Dr. John, Juvenile, Buckwheat Zydeco, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and Galactic.
One name glaring in its absence is the Neville Brothers, a Jazzfest regular for the last 15 years. Aaron Neville suffers from asthma and says his doctor told him to stay away "because of that stuff in the air ... it would hurt me," he told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Still, Jazzfest director Quint Davis hopes the event will be packed with tourists as well as native Louisianians. "This is your homecoming dance," he said at a recent press conference.
